House rules

Kiln Tiles

One hundred and forty-four glazed tiles stacked in a stepped kiln. Take two free tiles with the same mark, where free means nothing on top and an open side. Every deal can be cleared. The daily deal uses 36 marks; the weekly deal uses 72 different marks, two of each.

Play Kiln Tiles

Free, no sign-up. Mouse, touch or keyboard.

How to play

  • Click a free tile, then its twin (or drag one onto the other).
  • Arrows move the cursor, N and B cycle the free tiles, Enter or Space pick and match.
  • U undo, H hint, E end, X cancel.
  • P to pause.

On touch

  • Tap a bright (free) tile, then tap its twin.
  • Matching twins glow while a tile is picked up.
  • Undo, Hint and End sit along the bottom.

Take as long as you like. Pause any time with P; calm mode turns off every flash and shake.

Maker’s note

Tile-matching solitaire grew up as a game of patient looking: a heap of tiles, a few open edges and one twin hiding under the rest. Ours is built from our own glaze marks, nine shapes, four dot counts and two colours, drawn in code, stacked in a kiln-brick pyramid. Each deal is built backwards from a real clearance so it can always be cleared, every pair is recorded as a move, and the fastest clean clear of the day takes the board.
