Maker’s note

Draughts is the table game every grandparent seems to play without looking. Ours is the English rules: forced captures, long multi-jumps, kings that crown and stop. Pieces are turned wooden discs drawn in code on a felt table under a lamp. Ranked play is a pair of seeded opponents who feel like people rather than a perfect machine: the easy one drops pieces now and then, the medium one never hangs a piece for nothing, the hard one looks several moves ahead. Ranked play is the day's seeded line-up of computer opponents, easiest to hardest: wins, winning margin and fewest moves score points, a quick finish earns a small time bonus, and every undo or hint costs points. Each run is stored as a list of moves, so the server replays the whole set, the opponents' replies included, before it counts. The free game lets you pick Easy, Medium, Hard or two players on one device (two-player games are unranked).
