Maker’s note
The mill game was scratched onto cathedral cloisters and played with pebbles for centuries. Ours is nine pieces on three nested squares, with flying once you are down to three and the rule that a piece in a mill is safe unless every piece is. The two daily opponents are seeded; the draws are real, because a good defender can hold. Ranked play is the day's seeded line-up of computer opponents, easiest to hardest: wins, winning margin and fewest moves score points, a quick finish earns a small time bonus, and every undo or hint costs points. Each run is stored as a list of moves, so the server replays the whole set, the opponents' replies included, before it counts. The free game lets you pick Easy, Medium, Hard or two players on one device (two-player games are unranked).
