How to play
- Click a checker, then its point, or drag it.
- Click the picked checker again to play it with the larger die.
- Arrows + Enter pick up and place, X cancels.
- U undo, H hint, Q end.
- P to pause.
On touch
- Tap a checker, then a green ring, or drag it.
- Tap it twice to play the bigger die.
- Undo, Hint and End sit along the bottom.
Take as long as you like. Pause any time with P; calm mode turns off every flash and shake.
Maker’s note
Backgammon is thousands of years old and our version keeps it plain: fifteen checkers a side, two dice, doubles played four times, hits sent to the bar, bearing off once everyone is home. It is played for points only: a win is one point, two for a gammon and three for a backgammon. The "play as many dice as you can, the larger if only one" rule is enforced for you and for the computer. The dice are a seeded hash of the day, so everyone gets the same game and undo can never re-roll them. The computer rolls the same dice you would and has three levels: easy counts pips and little else, medium avoids lone checkers and builds points, hard builds blocks, keeps anchors and watches for shots. Ranked play is one game, medium on the daily and hard on the weekly. Winning margin, a quick finish and a small time bonus score points, and undo and hint cost points. Each run is stored as a list of moves and replayed on the server, dice and replies included.
