Maker’s note
Euchre was the card game of the Midwest kitchen table and the early online card rooms, and it is a quick one: twenty-four cards, five tricks, a turned-up card and a decision. Ours is drawn in brass and lamplight, with three computer players who count trumps, notice who has run out of a suit and, on the hard setting, test a few possible deals in their heads before every card. The dealer picks up the turned card and discards. If everyone passes twice the hand is thrown in and dealt again, and after four throw-ins in a row the dealer must name trump. Making your call takes three tricks, all five tricks score two, a lone march scores four, and being euchred hands the other side two. Daily play is medium, weekly is hard, free play lets you choose. Every call, discard and card is written down as a move, so a game can be replayed hand by hand; the score rewards points, margin and speed, and undo only reaches back within the current hand.
